Combat Squad Series 2

Well, Hasbro has officially canned the 8″ GI Joe line, but there are still a few figs to be released from the final series. One of these last ditch efforts is the second series of ‘military themed’ Combat Squad figures. Basically, these guys are repaints and rehashes of previously released Sigma6 figures. The second, and final, assortment includes Navy Seal Lt. Torpedo, Mountain Scout Sgt. Boulder, and Jungle Warfare Expert Recondo (not to be confused with the Adventure Team Recondo who bares no resemblance to this figure outside of his name… weird, Hasbro. Just weird.). LT. TORPEDO

Okay, first things first. Torpedo is a head-to-toe reuse of the Sigma6 series one Snake-eyes sculpt. He’s just molded in light grey plastic and given some black paint accents. His gear - from his body harness down to his propulsion submersible thingee - is a straight reuse of accessories from the Soldier Class Series 1 Sea Ops Duke figure. So, you’re getting a total repackaged repaint. He does include an AK-47 that is ‘new’, but is really just a toss-in from a 12″ figure. Overall, I’d say this figure (this whole series, really) is an easy pass. But, since I’m a sucker for any and all scuba dudes, into my collection he goes!

SGT BOULDER

Okay, I was suckered into buying Torpedo because he’s a sea diver, and I dig that. I think it has something to do with my idealized nostalgic feelings about playing with my old-school Joes in the tub as a kid… I digress. I drew the line with Sgt. Boulder. This mismatched hodgepodge of a figure really doesn’t have a lot of saving graces. He’s a repainted Shipwreck with Heavy Duty’s head stuck on top, which is just odd, since the Heavy Duty figure is a good two inches taller than the Shipwreck figure. What you end up with is a stocky little GI Joe who looks like he belongs in Middle Earth. Whatevs. If you’re into disproportionate mountain climbing dwarf soldiers, then this guy is for you! RECONDO

The Recondo figure we got in the Adventure Team series is my favorite of all the 8″ GI Joe releases. This Recondo, is a dirty bastardization of the previous Recondo’s good name. It’s a weird puke green repaint of Camo Long Range’s body with Tunnel Rat’s head on top. Um… another place where Hasbro has combined a head and body that simply aren’t in proportion with each other. Tunnel Rat is the tiniest figure in this entire line. His head is little. Moreover, they painted it camouflaged with… blonde hair! This guy looks like one of the pigmy hunters in the waiting room in Beetlejuice. Definitely wasn’t a buy for me. But, it was for the hardcore Joe fans at joebattlelines, and they have a nice review with good pics.
